Migrant Boat Crossings In UK Reach 19-Month High
- 882 asylum seekers arrived in the UK
- This surges the year's total to over 12,300
- Sunak's government faces scrutiny
A record 882 asylum seekers arrived in the UK on small boats on Tuesday, the highest daily total since November 2022.
This surge brings the year’s total to over 12,300, putting pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ahead of the July 4 election.
Sunak’s government has pledged to “stop the boats” and curb illegal migration, with a controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.
However, this plan has yet to take effect due to the snap election call.
The opposition Labour Party, leading in polls, promises to scrap the Rwanda policy and instead establish a Border Security Command to combat people smuggling.
With immigration a key election issue, Sunak’s government faces scrutiny over its handling of the crisis.
