Interior Ministry Renews Curfew in Bawku and Bunkpurugu
The Ministry of Interior has renewed a curfew imposed on the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region and Bunkpurugu township and its environs in the North East Region. The curfew, which takes effect from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am starting Tuesday, June 18, 2024, aims to maintain peace and order in the areas.
According to a press release issued by Interior Minister Henry Quartey, the renewed curfew hours are part of efforts to ensure the safety and security of residents in the affected areas. The Ministry urged chiefs, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to exercise restraint and use non-violent means to resolve ongoing challenges.
The decision to renew the curfew comes after a thorough assessment of the security situation in the regions. The Ministry acknowledged the ongoing challenges in the areas but emphasized its commitment to ensuring peace and stability.
The total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons in the affected communities and surrounding areas has also been reiterated. “Anyone found with arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” the Ministry warned.
The renewed curfew and ban on weapons aim to prevent any potential escalation of violence and ensure the safety of all residents. The Ministry encouraged anyone with information on potential security threats to come forward and assist in maintaining peace in the regions.
