The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, announced that the government has set aside GHC1.5 million for the upcoming Green Ghana Day project, a significant decrease from previous years’ allocations.
Despite this reduction, the event aims to plant 10 million tree seedlings on June 7th, 2024, under the theme “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow.”
During a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Abu Jinapor emphasized the substantial costs involved in this endeavor and highlighted the crucial role of private sector contributions alongside government funding.
He disclosed that while corporate support primarily fuels the initiative, the government’s financial backing has gradually decreased from GHC2 million in 2021 to GHC1.5 million this year.
The Green Ghana Day initiative, which debuted in 2021 with the planting of seven million trees, has seen remarkable growth, with 26 million trees planted in 2022 and 10 million in 2023.
Despite maintaining the same planting target as the previous year, the ministry remains committed to ensuring the highest possible survival rate for the newly planted trees.
