Asare Bediako SHS wins 2024 World Environment Day debate

Asare Bediako Senior High School in the Adansi North District has emerged victorious in the 2024 World Environment Day (WED) debate competition. The competition was organized by AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Ghana Education Service.

The event started with a thrilling quiz competition involving 10 schools from the Adansi North District. The schools that participated in the quiz competition were Obuasi Senior High School, Christ the King Catholic, Edubiase SHS, Jacobu SHTS, Bodwesango, SHS Akrofuom SHTS, Dompoase SHS, Fomana T.I Amass, Asare Bediako SHS, and Apagya SHS.

After the quiz competition, Asare Bediako SHS and Apagya SHS emerged as the top two schools and proceeded to the debate competition. The debate topic was “The Fight Against Desertification can be won”.

The debate competition was held in Obuasi and was a grueling contest between the two schools. At the end of the competition, Asare Bediako SHS emerged victorious with 83.3 points, while Apagya Senior High School scored 81 points.

Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, an official from AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, stated that the quiz competition was part of the company’s long-term initiatives to improve quality education in their host communities. She added that the competition aimed to nurture future leaders in Adansi.

According to Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, the competition was designed to improve general knowledge and fun learning methods, while also nurturing oratory and public speaking skills in the students. She emphasized that these skills are critical for future leaders in today’s global village.

The competition also aimed to raise awareness about environmental protection and the fight against desertification and climate change. Antwi Jacqueline, a contestant from Asare Bediako SHS, stated that the competition had given them valuable insights into environmental protection.

Antwi Jacqueline appealed to the government to institute stringent measures to deal with environmental polluters. She suggested that punitive measures would serve as a deterrent to others and help protect the environment.

The event was hailed as a success, with organizers and participants alike praising the initiative. The competition demonstrated the importance of involving the youth in the fight against environmental destruction and climate change.

Asare Bediako Senior High School was declared the winner of the 2024 World Environment Day debate competition, and the students were awarded prizes for their outstanding performance.
