EC Dismisses Allegations of Covert Registration as Unfounded

Story Highlights
  • Refutation of allegations
  • Clarification on missing laptops
  • Rejection of deceitful claims

The Electoral Commission (EC) has firmly refuted allegations of clandestine registration practices for the 2024 elections, dismissing them as groundless and lacking substance.

The EC emphasized that the recent incident involving five missing laptops should not be misconstrued as a means to register applicants covertly.

In response to assertions made by Election Watch Ghana during a press conference in Accra on May 20, where it was alleged that the EC was utilizing the absent BVRs for secretive registration purposes, the EC stressed the fallacy of such claims.

Mark Ewusi, the convenor of Election Watch Ghana, insinuated a deliberate manipulation of data stemming from the purportedly stolen BVRs.

However, during a subsequent press briefing titled ‘Let the Citizen Know’ on Tuesday, May 21, the EC denounced these accusations, labeling them as deceitful and aimed at misleading the public.

Samuel Tetteh, Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Operations, reiterated that the EC has never reported any theft of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

Tetteh clarified, “The Commission has alerted the security agencies regarding the disappearance of five laptops. Referring to these laptops as BVRs is a deliberate misrepresentation intended to mislead the public.”

The EC urged the populace to dismiss these unfounded claims and reiterated its commitment to transparent and fair electoral processes.
