Renowned Nigerian comedian and actress Real Warri Pikin has declared that comedy is the hardest craft in the world. In an exclusive interview with Doreen Avio, she emphasized that comedy is a live craft with no room for editing, making it even more demanding.
“Comedy is the hardest craft, quote me anywhere. Comedy is live, you don’t edit it, if you mess up, you mess up live. It’s the hardest craft, quote me anywhere,” she stressed.
Real Warri Pikin, whose real name is Anita Asuoha, revealed that she has explored various aspects of the entertainment industry, including hosting events, dancing (her first love), and singing. However, comedy did not come easily to her.
She also highlighted the challenges faced by women in the male-dominated comedy industry, stating that they must work twice as hard to prove themselves. “Comedy again is a male-dominated industry, it’s not easy to be a woman, you have to be strong. If I hold the mic, I hold it like a penis. If you are a woman, you are made to work twice as hard to prove yourself, and it’s not fair,” she said.
To succeed in the competitive comedy industry, Real Warri Pikin emphasized the importance of self-discovery, hard work, and creativity. “I worked, I read books, I watched YouTube videos, I worked on myself, I discovered myself to understand the kind of comedy I wanted to do, then I started putting in the work. It’s very hard, it’s not easy. I write my comedy; people have to be creative and spontaneous,” she advised.
Additionally, she stressed the need for comedians to research their audience and tailor their jokes accordingly, especially when performing in different locations.
