Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sought to clarify a recent statement where he appeared to suggest paying churches for their contributions to societal development.
During a meeting with the Clergy in the North East Region, Dr Bawumia explained that his remarks were intended humorously and not as a serious policy proposal.
Speaking to clergy members, Dr Bawumia emphasized the significant role churches and faith-based organizations play in the country’s development, citing their contributions to education, healthcare, and social welfare.
He acknowledged the necessity of supporting these institutions to continue their impactful work but underscored that his comments about payment were made in jest.
The Vice President reiterated his stance against imposing taxes on churches, instead advocating for providing incentives to encourage further collaboration between religious institutions and the government in advancing national development goals.
Dr Bawumia’s clarification aims to address any misunderstanding stemming from his earlier remarks made during a meeting in the Bono East region.
The episode underscores the delicate balance between humor and policy discourse, especially in matters as sensitive as taxation and religious institutions’ roles in society.
