Colombian President Cuts Off Diplomatic Relations with Israel
- Colombian President Gustavo Petro took a decisive stance by declaring the severance of ties with Israel amid the Gaza War
- This move represents one of the most significant steps taken by a Latin American nation during the Gaza conflict
- President Petro's decision aligns with his established anti-Israel position
Colombian President Gustavo Petro made a bold announcement, declaring that Colombia would sever its ties with Israel amid the ongoing Gaza War. Petro cited Israel’s leadership, particularly Prime Minister Netanyahu, labeling them as “genocidal.” Addressing a crowd gathered at Bogota’s Bolívar Plaza during May Day marches, Petro emphasized the necessity of this action, proclaiming a decisive shift in Colombia’s foreign policy.
This move marks one of the most drastic measures taken by a Latin American nation during the Gaza conflict. While Bolivia also severed diplomatic relations with Israel, that decision was part of a broader deterioration in bilateral relations. Additionally, Mexico and Chile have pursued legal avenues to condemn Israeli actions, while Honduras and Chile recalled their ambassadors from Tel Aviv.
President Petro’s decision reflects his longstanding anti-Israel stance, dating back to his election in 2022. He had previously signaled Colombia’s intent to sever ties if Israel failed to adhere to UN Security Council calls for an immediate ceasefire. In a further demonstration of Colombia’s stance, Petro announced earlier that the country would halt arms purchases from Israel.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz vehemently criticized Petro’s move, accusing him of aligning with “despicable monsters.” Katz emphasized the historical ties between Israel and Colombia, dismissing Petro’s stance as hateful and antisemitic.
While Petro’s announcement garnered support from his audience, it faced criticism from other Colombian leaders. Medellín Mayor Federico “Fico” Gutiérrez denounced the decision, highlighting Israel’s longstanding partnership with Colombia and warning against isolationism in international affairs.
Gustavo Petro, a former member of the leftist M-19 movement, has maintained a controversial political trajectory marked by his past involvement in guerrilla activities.
