Civil society organization Africa Education Watch has strongly condemned the violent incidents that resulted in the deaths of three students at Nalerigu Senior High School and Bawku Senior High School on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

In a statement released on July 28, the group described the attacks as a grave violation of the sanctity of learning environments and the fundamental right to life.

At Nalerigu SHS, two students—Lukman and Gideon—were reportedly shot dead in their dormitory by unidentified gunmen. That same evening, Hakim Kundima, an 18-year-old final-year student at Bawku SHS, was abducted from his dormitory and later found shot dead.

“These horrific incidents have shaken the conscience of the nation,” the statement read.

Africa Education Watch is urging the government, the Ministry of Education, and security agencies to:

  • Launch immediate investigations
  • Guarantee security in schools located in conflict-prone areas
  • Support ongoing peace initiatives, particularly those led by the Asantehene
  • Ensure that students can safely sit for the WASSCE examinations

The organization also called for psychosocial support for both students and staff affected by the tragedies.

“Our hearts go out to the families of Lukman, Gideon, and Hakim. Their deaths must compel swift and meaningful action to protect every student,” the statement concluded.
