The Central Regional Championship of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) began today, featuring a competitive lineup of nineteen schools battling for just four coveted spots in the finals scheduled for tomorrow.

Thirteen schools advanced from the qualifiers, now joined by six seeded schools, setting the stage for an intense contest among some of the region’s top academic talents.

The opening contest featured St. Augustine’s College, Hope College, Nyakrom SHTS, Mfantsiman Girls, and Obiri Yeboah SHS. The energy was electric from the start, with a large crowd from St. Augustine’s igniting the atmosphere with loud jama chants even before the quiz began.

In round one, all teams except Mfantsiman Girls answered their initial questions correctly. Nyakrom SHTS quickly took advantage, snatching a bonus. St. Augustine’s College delivered a strong and steady performance, correctly answering both main and bonus questions. By the end of the round, they had built an early lead with 25 points, followed by Mfantsiman Girls with 17, Nyakrom SHTS with 14, and both Hope College and Obiri Yeboah SHS trailing with 4 points each.

Round two—the speed round—was where St. Augustine’s tightened their grip. They were first to ring in on the opening questions and got all of them right, drawing thunderous applause from their fans. While no school attempted the fourth question, St. Augustine’s returned to claim the fifth. Despite efforts from all schools, none managed to answer the sixth correctly. By round’s end, Augusco had surged ahead with 46 points. Mfantsiman dropped slightly to 16, Nyakrom held at 14, while Obiri Yeboah and Hope College trailed at 12 and 11 points respectively.

The third round, which featured true or false questions, saw clean performances across most teams. Only Hope College and Obiri Yeboah made notable errors. St. Augustine’s continued to dominate, reaching 59 points. Mfantsiman climbed to 34, Nyakrom to 27, Hope to 21, and Obiri Yeboah to 20.

In the final round, St. Augustine’s College confidently sealed their victory, finishing with a commanding 65 points and securing the first slot in the finals. Mfantsiman Girls followed with 38, Nyakrom SHTS earned 30, while Hope College and Obiri Yeboah concluded with 21 and 20 points respectively.
