A Level 200 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Fatawu Amponsah, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court for robbing a hairdresser in Abuakwa.

The 25-year-old, who also works as a driver’s mate, pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea by the presiding judge, Gloria Mensah Bonsu.

According to Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, who led the prosecution, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on June 16, 2025. The victim, Juliet Nyarko, a hairdresser apprentice in Abuakwa-Asenemaso, was on her way home when Amponsah trailed her.

He confronted her along a quiet stretch of road and demanded her iPhone 11, valued at GH₵3,000. When she refused, he pulled out a kitchen knife, assaulted her severely until she weakened, pushed her to the ground, and fled with the phone.

Nyarko’s cries for help alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the scene, pursued the assailant, and managed to apprehend him. He was handed over to the Abuakwa police.

In his caution statement, Amponsah confessed to the crime. Following further investigations, he was charged with robbery and arraigned before the court, which handed down the 10-year custodial sentence.
