Cardinal Turkson Urges Ghanaians to Embrace Shared Responsibility

- Citizens must engage in civic duties and not rely solely on government
- Emphasized the importance of voting wisely and daily contributions
His Eminence Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Social Sciences, has emphasized that the responsibility of developing Ghana lies with all citizens—not just the President or government.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Cardinal Turkson highlighted the importance of civic engagement, urging Ghanaians to see themselves as active participants in shaping the nation’s future.
“Ghana is more than just the President or government officials. The country belongs to all its people, not just those in leadership positions,” he said.
He reiterated that while national leaders are tasked with governance, meaningful development requires the collective effort of every citizen.
“Nation-building is a shared responsibility. The state provides the structure, but it’s the people who give it life through their actions and contributions,” he stated. “On occasions like July 1, we must reflect on the role each of us plays in the progress of our country.”
Cardinal Turkson encouraged Ghanaians to take their civic duties seriously—whether through everyday contributions to society or making informed choices at the ballot box by electing leaders who reflect their values.
His remarks came shortly after he delivered an address during Ghana’s National Day of Prayer on July 1—an initiative launched by President John Dramani Mahama to promote unity, spiritual reflection, and renewed national hope amid ongoing social and economic challenges.
The event brought together religious leaders, government officials, civil society groups, and citizens from across the country. It featured interfaith prayers focused on peace, national unity, economic recovery, and moral renewal.
The Christian prayer service was held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra, while the Islamic observance took place at the National Mosque, also in the capital.Cardinal Turkson Urges Ghanaians to Embrace Shared Responsibility in Nation-Building
