GTEC Resolves TEWU-TUC VS. TEWU-GH Dispute

Story Highlights
  • GTEC declares TEWU-TUC the official representative of workers on public university governing councils
  • Directive follows extensive consultations and legal review due to conflict with TEWU-GH
  • TEWU-GH members previously inducted must step down

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially recognized the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union under the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) as the rightful representative of workers on the Governing Councils of public traditional universities.

In a statement dated June 18, 2025, and signed by Director-General Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, GTEC explained that the decision followed thorough consultations and legal review, stemming from ongoing disputes between TEWU-TUC and TEWU-GH regarding council representation.

GTEC has directed all public universities to immediately swear in TEWU-TUC representatives and grant them the full rights and responsibilities associated with council membership.

The Commission also made it clear that TEWU-GH members should no longer consider themselves council members, even if they had previously been inducted.

GTEC expressed hope that the directive would bring closure to the dispute and called on all stakeholders to support the smooth governance of tertiary institutions.
