Reiterating GNPC’s mission to become a globally respected energy company, Mr. Ussif emphasized how the Corporation’s growing gas portfolio is central to national goals—fueling domestic power needs, driving industrialisation, lowering electricity costs, and positioning Ghana as West Africa’s energy hub.
Ghana currently produces around 425 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of natural gas from the Jubilee, TEN, Sankofa-Gye Nyame fields, and Nigerian imports. This powers roughly 70% of the country’s electricity. However, with demand outpacing supply, GNPC is working with partners to ramp up production.
By July 2025, Jubilee’s output is expected to increase from 100MMscfd to 140MMscfd, while Sankofa will rise from 245MMscfd to 270MMscfd. Even so, the gap remains significant—prompting GNPC to develop an LNG import terminal by 2026 and pursue further exploration offshore and in the Voltaian Basin.
Mr. Ussif highlighted GNPC’s pivotal role in the gas value chain, citing key infrastructure projects such as the $190 million Takoradi-Tema Interconnection Project (TTIP), which enabled reverse gas flow and enhanced regional energy security.
GNPC has also underwritten key energy initiatives, including the Sankofa Gas Project, the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, and the relocation of the Karpowership to Sekondi to utilise domestic gas. The Corporation also financed the 110km Prestea-Kumasi gas pipeline, laying the groundwork for a third power hub in Ghana’s middle belt, where two new power plants are set to come online by year-end.
Private Sector Collaboration and Future Projects
Calling for greater private sector engagement, Mr. Ussif encouraged collaboration in developing Ghana’s gas infrastructure. He outlined upcoming projects including expanded production from Jubilee, TEN, and Sankofa fields, construction of the Tema City Gate, and the rollout of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) network and pipelines in the Tema industrial enclave.
“GNPC is open for partnership—with those who share our commitment to sustainable growth, innovation, and regional development,” he said.
GNPC as a Regional Leader in Energy Transition
Reaffirming GNPC’s alignment with Ghana’s decarbonisation goals and a just energy transition, Mr. Ussif stressed the Corporation’s commitment to environmentally responsible and inclusive growth.
He concluded with a rallying call for collective regional action:
“Let us, together, unlock the immense potential of natural gas and light the way for millions across West Africa.”
