The Telecel Ghana Foundation has donated 100 new laptops to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, reinforcing efforts to bridge the digital divide for underprivileged students. This marks the Foundation’s second contribution to KNUST’s Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL) initiative, following a 2021 donation of 200 laptops in response to an appeal from the university.
The initiative aligns with the Telecel Ghana Foundation’s Connected Learning focus, which aims to close the digital gap by providing training and access to digital tools for underserved communities. Leading the donation on campus, Telecel Ghana CEO and KNUST alumna, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, said the donation fulfills a promise made the previous year to support the university’s impactful program.
“We hope this contribution helps bridge the digital divide and fosters inclusion. These laptops will enable more students to fully engage in virtual learning, collaborate on academic projects, and take charge of their education,” Ing. Obo-Nai stated.
Launched in 2021 by KNUST’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, the SONSOL initiative seeks to equip students from less privileged backgrounds with laptops to support their academic journey, particularly in adapting to digital learning amid limited ICT resources. The university’s call to action noted that over 3,000 students faced serious challenges accessing digital tools.
Receiving the laptops, Prof. Dickson expressed deep appreciation for the timely donation, describing it as a game-changer for brilliant but financially constrained students.
“This investment means a lot. Thanks to your ongoing support and connectivity, we’ve been able to reach this far. The laptops will unlock the potential of these gifted students and have a ripple effect far beyond the immediate beneficiaries,” she said.
KNUST SRC Vice President, Samuel Afful, emphasized the relief this donation brings to students who constantly worry about borrowing or damaging shared devices.
“For many students, getting access to a laptop is a daily struggle. This donation offers them not just tools, but hope and peace of mind,” he noted.
The donation forms part of Telecel Ghana’s Ashanti Month—an annual celebration recognizing the company’s strong ties and partnerships within the Ashanti Region.
