National Service Allowances Likely to Increase – NSA Director General

Story Highlights
  • NSA in talks with Finance Ministry to raise allowances
  • New service year sees a 26% drop in enrolment—132,393 registered
  • Over 3,500 applications rejected from unaccredited institutions

The National Service Authority (NSA) has announced plans to increase allowances for personnel in the upcoming service year.

Speaking at a Pre-Service Orientation in Kumasi, NSA Director General Felix Gyamfi revealed that ongoing discussions with the Finance Ministry are expected to lead to an upward adjustment in the national service allowance.

“There’s a strong possibility it will be included in the national budget. I’m confident the new batch of personnel will likely benefit from the revised allowance,” he said.

The NSA has also released PIN codes for 132,393 prospective service personnel, marking a 26% drop compared to the average over the past three years. Compared to the 2022/2023 service year, which had the highest enrolment, this represents a 36% decline.

Part of this decline is attributed to stricter validation measures. About 3,597 submissions from 22 unaccredited institutions were rejected following verification by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.

Felix Gyamfi explained that this drop in enrolment would help cut costs and potentially lead to better remuneration for enlisted personnel.

“If you calculate GH₵750 per head, the savings become very clear,” he noted.

The NSA is also urging Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs) to host service personnel, as a way to build youth interest in the informal sector and support economic development.

“We’re ready to post personnel to places like Abossey Okai, Kokompe, and Suame Magazine—these hubs hold significant economic value, often surpassing some IT firms in capital,” Gyamfi stated.

Additionally, the NSA plans to deploy 10,000 personnel for military training, pending final approval. A course outline has been prepared, focusing on discipline, alertness, and emergency response.

Gyamfi encouraged Ghanaian youth to embrace the evolving opportunities within the national service programme.
