Baba Rahman Slams Poor Pitch Conditions In Ghana

Black Stars defender Baba Rahman has voiced strong concerns over the deteriorating state of football pitches in Ghana, describing the issue as a major source of national embarrassment.

Ghana has faced repeated criticism from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in recent years due to the substandard quality of its playing surfaces. The problem was once again brought into the spotlight during the 2024/25 FA Cup final at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where fans expressed their frustration over the poor pitch conditions.

In an interview with Joy Sports, Rahman urged swift intervention from sports authorities to address the long-standing challenge.

“This is a serious issue that requires urgent attention,” said the PAOK FC defender.
“I’m appealing to the powers that be — at the very least, let’s ensure the national team has a decent pitch to play on. It’s quite embarrassing at times.”

Rahman also noted the impact this has had on Ghana’s international image.

“After national duty, when I return to my club, my teammates often mock the condition of the pitches we play on. It’s honestly a disgrace to the country.”

While acknowledging the environmental difficulties involved in pitch maintenance, he stressed the need for greater commitment.

“Yes, the weather can be challenging, but that shouldn’t stop us from making improvements. Upgrading our pitches will benefit all levels of Ghanaian football — from the youth teams to the women’s national side.”

Rahman’s comments echo a growing call within Ghana’s football community for better infrastructure to support the development and international credibility of the sport.
