Ghana Introduces 5-Day Visa Processing Policy

Story Highlights
  • Ghana reduces visa processing time from 4–6 weeks to 5 working days
  • Policy takes immediate effect, announced by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa
  • This aims to boost tourism, attract investment, and enhance Ghana’s global competitiveness

The Government of Ghana has introduced a new visa policy that significantly shortens the processing time to a maximum of five working days, down from the previous 4 to 6 weeks. The announcement was made by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who stated that the policy takes effect immediately and is part of efforts to position Ghana as a leading destination for tourism, business, and investment in Africa.

“We have implemented robust measures at our diplomatic missions to dramatically reduce visa processing times,” the Ministry shared in a post on Facebook.

According to the Minister, systems are already in place across Ghana’s global diplomatic missions to ensure the smooth rollout of this accelerated process.

The initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s January 7, 2025, inaugural address, in which he declared, “Ghana is open for business.”

The Ministry explained that this new visa regime gives tangible form to that vision by eliminating bureaucratic hurdles that have long hindered travelers and potential investors.

“As Foreign Minister, my goal is to make Ghana more attractive to investors and tourists by enhancing competitiveness and cutting red tape,” Mr. Ablakwa said.

However, the Ministry stressed that a faster processing time does not imply guaranteed approval.

“A decision on visa eligibility will be made within five working days,” the statement clarified.

This new policy is expected to stimulate tourism, draw increased foreign investment, and strengthen ties with the Ghanaian diaspora.

“Ghana is truly open for business. Come and experience the Black Star spirit,” the Minister concluded.
