Ghana Government Supports Expansion of Local Automotive Sector

Story Highlights
  • Government pledges continued support for automotive firms like Zonda Tec Ghana Ltd
  • Auto policy under review to include heavy-duty trucks and boost local production
  • The goal is to attract more Chinese investment into Ghana’s auto and related sectors

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a supportive environment for automotive companies like Zonda Tec Ghana Limited to grow and succeed in the local market. As part of a broader strategy to strengthen economic partnerships and attract foreign direct investment, efforts are also underway to draw more Chinese investment into Ghana’s automotive sector.

Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, emphasized this commitment during a media interaction following her working visit to Zonda Tec’s facilities in Tema. She highlighted the government’s focus on promoting the automotive industry as a key engine for job creation and industrial transformation.

“The current auto policy does not yet cover heavy-duty trucks like those Zonda manufactures, so we’re in the process of reviewing it to include their segment. These are the kinds of changes that will incentivize increased local production,” she explained. “Under the directive of His Excellency, I will be traveling to China with representatives from Zonda and other Chinese companies to attract additional investment in the automotive and related sectors. I am impressed by what I’ve seen here and encourage Ghanaians to support these locally assembled products.”

Zonda Tec Ghana Limited’s Managing Director, Yang Yang, also expressed the company’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Ghana.

“We are benefiting from the auto policy through our assembly of pickups and SUVs. Currently, we operate three factories and eight branches with over 500 employees,” she said. “Ghana offers a very promising environment. I always say Ghana is like a blank sheet—you write on it what you bring. With positive energy, you’ll create positive results.”
