GPRTU Announces 15% Fare Reduction Effective May 25

- GPRTU reduces fares by 15% starting May 25, 2025
- Union exceeds its usual adjustment formula to ease passenger burden
- Fare cut responds to an 18% drop in fuel prices
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025.
The decision was made following a meeting between the Union’s National Executive and the Minister of Transport.
Speaking to 3news, the GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed the agreement:
“We just concluded a meeting with the Transport Minister, and it was agreed that starting Saturday, May 25, transport fares will be reduced by 15%.”
He explained that the fare reduction is in direct response to an 18% drop in fuel prices. While the Union traditionally applies a one-third formula when adjusting fares based on fuel price changes, they decided to go further this time.
“We usually adjust fares based on a third of the fuel price reduction, but we’ve opted for a 15% cut to help ease the financial burden on passengers,” he said. “We also urge players in the spare parts sector to reduce their prices in line with the trend.”
Abbas emphasized that the fare reduction was implemented even without a decrease in other cost factors.
“We want to make it clear that we didn’t wait for reductions in other cost components before applying the 15% cut,” he added.
He also issued a warning to union members:
“Any member who refuses to comply will face sanctions. Once the Union decides, everyone must follow suit.”
