AMA Begins Decongestion Exercise in Accra’s Central Business District

- AMA launches operation to remove street traders from the CBD
- Targeted areas include Kinbu Road, Opera Square, and Adabraka
- Part of broader efforts to restore order in the city centre
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched a comprehensive decongestion operation to clear street traders from the Central Business District (CBD), aiming to restore order and enhance sanitation in the city centre. On the morning of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, AMA task forces, with support from the Ghana Police Service, conducted a coordinated sweep to dismantle unauthorized kiosks and makeshift stalls, and remove vendors occupying pavements and roadsides in key areas of the CBD.
The AMA stated that the operation is part of a renewed push to enforce city bylaws, reduce congestion, and ensure the safe and smooth movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
The initial phase of the exercise is targeting areas around the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and from Opera Square through to Adabraka.
