A special police task force targeting illegal mining activities has intercepted and impounded four excavators in Akani, located in Ghana’s Western Region.
Two of the excavators were reportedly being escorted by individuals suspected to be military personnel.
According to ACP Eric Asiedu, Director of Special Operations at the Police Headquarters, the operation was initiated based on credible intelligence about the suspicious transport of heavy mining machinery near the Samreboï Township.
Under the leadership of ASP Mr. Adorye, the police team moved swiftly to a designated location where they intercepted two low-bed trucks, each loaded with an excavator.
Earlier that same day, the team had conducted a successful raid at a major illegal mining site in Akani, on the outskirts of Asankragua. The raid led to the arrest of nine individuals and the confiscation of equipment used in illegal mining operations.
This action is part of ongoing efforts by the police to support the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) broader strategy to combat illegal mining and protect the country’s natural resources.
All seized equipment has since been secured by the police.
