Italian energy company Eni has unveiled its 19th annual sustainability report, “Eni for 2024 – A Just Transition,” highlighting its continued progress toward a sustainable and inclusive energy future. The report outlines how Eni is balancing industrial growth with environmental protection and social advancement.
The 2024 edition arrives during a landmark year for sustainability reporting, following the implementation of the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). While Eni issued its first CSRD-compliant Sustainability Statement, it also retained its Eni for report to provide stakeholders with more accessible and comprehensive insights into its ESG performance.
“We live in an era of rapid, complex change,” stated CEO Claudio Descalzi. “Our strength lies in anticipating and evolving. In 2024, we continued our transformation, guided by a model that integrates environmental, economic, and social sustainability.”
Key Sustainability Milestones in 2024
- GHG Emissions Reduction:
Eni achieved a 55% reduction in net Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its Upstream operations compared to 2018, with a 37% reduction across all business segments. - Methane Goals:
The company reaffirmed its target of near-zero methane emissions by 2030. - Water Management:
Eni committed to achieving water positivity by 2035 at 30% of its freshwater-intensive sites in water-stressed regions. - Energy Transition Initiatives:
Eni’s integrated satellite business model continues to drive transformation:- Plenitude surpassed 4 GW in renewable capacity and aims for 15 GW by 2030. Its EV charging network grew to 21,000 points, reaching 10 million customers.
- Enilive increased biorefining capacity to 1.65 million tonnes and is targeting over 5 million tonnes annually by 2030, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production.
- Technology and Innovation:
Eni launched the HPC6 supercomputer and quantum venture Eniquantic. It also began converting its Livorno refinery into a biorefinery and revitalized its chemical subsidiary, Versalis.
Social and Community Impact
Eni reinforced its commitment to human rights, workplace safety, and gender-based violence prevention. In partnership with organizations like the ILO and IFC, it worked to improve agri-feedstock supply chains.
In 2024, Eni led over 100 local development projects in 21 countries, advancing access to energy, clean water, healthcare, and education—efforts aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The report underlines Eni’s long-term strategy to embed sustainability into all aspects of its operations, reinforcing its role in leading a fair and responsible energy transition.
