Stakeholders in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region have introduced new strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programme in the area.

During a stakeholder meeting in Kenyasi, Jeremiah Atengdem, a Water Expert with IRC Ghana, shared with Adom News that the district has seen significant improvements in access to clean water and hygiene since the WASH programme was launched in 2018.

Despite the progress, Mr. Atengdem warned that gains could be lost if communities and institutions fail to maintain water and sanitation facilities once external support ends.

“Some communities, schools, and health centres benefiting from the programme are not managing the facilities effectively,” he noted, stressing the need for coordinated stakeholder efforts to develop and implement sustainable maintenance strategies.

Samuel Badu Baiden, the Asutifi North District Coordinating Director, also praised the progress, citing an increase in water coverage from 40% to 90%. However, he acknowledged ongoing sanitation challenges linked to population growth.

He described the stakeholder meeting as crucial for crafting practical solutions that will secure the future of the WASH programme for generations to come.
