Ghana Airports Company Reclaims Prime Airport Land from McDan Group After Court Ruling

- GACL wins court case against McDan Group
- 16+ acres of land reclaimed near Kotoka International Airport
- Land to be repurposed for aviation development or partnerships
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully regained control of over 16 acres of valuable airport land previously held by subsidiaries of the McDan Group of Companies, following a decisive ruling by the Accra High Court on May 6, 2025.
The court granted GACL full possession of two parcels of land—approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres—located near Kotoka International Airport, adjacent to Action Chapel International. These lands had been leased to McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both part of the McDan Group, since 2012.

GACL initiated legal action in February 2025, citing multiple violations of lease agreements and unpaid ground rent amounting to $26,296. The company also sought a perpetual injunction to prevent future interference with the properties.
After applying for summary judgment, GACL prevailed in court, with the judge awarding all requested reliefs and ordering the defendants to pay GH¢50,000 in legal costs.
This ruling follows previous issues involving McDan Aviation, whose operations at Terminal 1 of KIA were suspended in December 2024 due to debt, though those obligations were later resolved.
GACL hailed the judgment as a major victory for public asset recovery. A company representative noted, “The repossession of these lands not only protects state resources but also upholds our commitment to lawful and transparent asset management.”
The legal success is credited to the joint efforts of GACL’s Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who led the asset recovery initiative.
With the land now back under its control, GACL is expected to consider new aviation-related developments or partnerships aimed at enhancing airport infrastructure and boosting revenue.
