Richard Akpokavie has officially taken the helm of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), marking the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana’s Olympic journey. The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday at the GOC headquarters in Accra, signaling the conclusion of Ben Nunoo Mensah’s eight-year leadership.

Akpokavie assumed office after a strong showing in the recent GOC elections. During the ceremony, outgoing President Nunoo Mensah handed over key items, including official documents, office keys, and leftover sports kits from the Tokyo 2021 Olympics and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Outgoing Treasurer Frederick Acheampong also passed on financial records to the new Treasurer, Evans Yeboah.

In his remarks, Akpokavie—who previously ran for the GOC presidency in 2019—called for collaboration among board members, sports federations, and the media, emphasizing the need to revitalize the Olympic movement in Ghana.

“This marks a fresh beginning for Ghana’s Olympic mission,” he stated. “We must unite to make the GOC a force for positive change in our sports landscape.”

Ben Nunoo Mensah urged his successor to continue advancing the GOC’s development goals, especially the completion of the OlympAfrica Juvenile Sports Excellence Centre in Amasaman.

Newly appointed GOC Secretary-General Mohammed Muniru commended Nunoo Mensah for his leadership and noted that his guidance would still be valued.

The ceremony was attended by several prominent GOC board members, including Mawuko Afadzinu, Ernest Danso, Bawa Fuseini, Nii Lante Bannerman, Kamal Sulley, and Isaac Duah.
