Israel commemorated its 77th Independence Day with a vibrant celebration in Accra, Ghana, under the theme “Bridges of Hope.” The event gathered members of the diplomatic corps, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, clergy, traditional authorities, and government officials.

Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Roey Gilad, reflected on the enduring relationship between Israel and Ghana, which dates back to 1956 when Israel first extended its diplomatic reach into Africa. While acknowledging the strength of bilateral ties, he also pointed to ongoing challenges, including long travel distances requiring two connecting flights and the continuing conflict in Israel, which have hindered further progress.

The occasion served not only to celebrate independence but also to call for renewed peace, hope, and unity with the people of Israel amidst the ongoing war in Gaza. Ambassador Gilad shared somber updates, stating that over 1,200 lives have been lost, with more than 50 individuals still held hostage after 578 days.

“578 days of suffering—not just for the hostages, but for all of us,” he said, stressing the urgency for Hamas to release the hostages, disarm, and withdraw from Gaza. “They hold the key to ending this tragedy.”

Representing the Ghanaian government, Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted Israel’s impactful contributions to Ghana in sectors such as agriculture, health, cybersecurity, and technology, and applauded Israeli firms for generating employment and fostering economic growth.

The event was a powerful expression of resilience, mutual support, and the shared desire for peace.
