GRA Collaborates with Key Agencies to Widen Tax Net

Story Highlights
  • Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) partners with SSNIT and Registrar of Companies
  • Target includes informal sector through engagement with business associations
  • Part of broader strategy to boost domestic revenue mobilisation

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has initiated collaborative efforts with key institutions, including the Registrar of Companies and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), to enhance the identification and tracking of businesses for improved tax compliance.

This initiative is part of GRA’s broader strategy to expand the tax base and boost domestic revenue generation.

Speaking during an X-Space discussion organised by Imani Ghana and its media partners under the theme “Resetting Ghana’s Revenue Mobilization,” Acting Commissioner-General Anthony Sarpong said the Authority aims to leverage technology to widen the tax net.

“Many businesses now operate online and use various digital platforms. Our approach is to follow them there through technology,” he explained.

He added that GRA is integrating its systems with other agencies through API connections. “We are currently in discussions with the Registrar of Companies to ensure all registered entities are linked to our data systems for proper monitoring,” he said.

Mr. Sarpong also highlighted ongoing talks with SSNIT, noting that while many businesses fulfil their social security obligations, they often neglect tax payments. “By partnering with SSNIT, we aim to identify all such businesses and ensure they meet their tax responsibilities,” he stated.

He further indicated that GRA will engage informal sector business associations to encourage voluntary tax declaration and compliance.
