Ghana Steps Up Plans to Revive National Airline

Story Highlights
  • High-level task force formed to fast-track national airline project
  • Ghana has lacked a national carrier since 2010
  • Government seeks investor partnerships due to economic constraints

Ghana’s efforts to revive a national airline are gaining momentum with the formation of a high-level task force dedicated to fast-tracking the project. This development marks a renewed determination by the government to re-establish a national carrier, following years of unfulfilled attempts.

The country has lacked a national airline for nearly 20 years, after services were halted due to operational debts that led to a U.S. ban. Ghana Airways, the original flag carrier, operated from 1958 until its collapse in 2004, and was briefly replaced by Ghana International Airlines, which ceased operations in 2010.

Renewed efforts began in September 2022, when Ashanti Airlines was chosen as the government’s strategic partner—reviving optimism for the re-launch of a rebranded “Ghana Airlines” and sparking interest from various industry stakeholders.

The newly appointed task force, established under President John Dramani Mahama’s directive and overseen by the Ministry of Transport, aims to attract investors and develop strategic partnerships to advance the project.

Earlier this year, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe confirmed the government’s commitment to pursuing the airline project through partnerships, acknowledging that current economic challenges prevent Ghana from doing it alone.
