Child Dies, Four Injured in Canoe Accident on Okyi River

A tragic incident on the Okyi River near Okyiso in the Assin South District of the Central Region has left one child dead and four others critically injured after a canoe capsized.
The victim, identified as 12-year-old Kojo Adu, was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby clinic. According to Adom News, the canoe was carrying five children, aged between 6 and 12, including three siblings, a friend, and the canoe operator.
The group was reportedly en route to Amoanda in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District in search of pears, using the river as their only crossing option. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear.
Residents of Assin Okyiso quickly responded, managing to rescue four of the children, while Kojo’s body was later recovered from the water.
Speaking to Adom News, the boy’s parents, Ama Ninaa and Kwabena Asane, voiced their grief and frustration over the loss.
The incident has prompted renewed calls from locals in both Assin Okyiso and Amoanda for the construction of a footbridge over the river. They are appealing to government officials, including Rev. Ntim Fordjour and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to prioritize the project to prevent further tragedies.
