Minister Kofi Adams Engages Stakeholders to Improve Ghana’s Sports Sector

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, initiated discussions with key stakeholders in the sports industry by meeting with leaders and representatives of various sports federations and associations in Accra on Monday, May 5, 2025.
This meeting marked the first stakeholder engagement organized by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation under Kofi Adams’ leadership.
In his opening remarks, the Minister emphasized the importance of regular engagement with stakeholders, believing it to be the best way to find lasting solutions to the challenges within the sports sector. He also took the opportunity to introduce himself and his team, who have been appointed to lead the development and growth of the sports industry.
“Since my appointment, several significant appointments have been made,” he mentioned.
Kofi Adams highlighted the importance of collaboration among national federations and encouraged them to learn from more established and structured bodies, using the Ghana Football Association as a model.
“The success of the Ghana Football ecosystem should serve as an example for all of us,” he noted.
The Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing all ongoing sports infrastructure projects. To further support the federations, he announced plans to establish quarterly meetings to review progress on the key issues discussed.
Presentations were made by the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), who outlined the regulatory framework for sports development, promotion, and regulation. He also shared plans to collaborate with sports journalists and media outlets to highlight different sports and athletes through monthly features.
Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), emphasized that sports are not just about medals but also about fair competition, respecting rules, and serving as role models for future generations. He reiterated that the GOC, representing federations focused on athlete development, has an important role in combating doping in sports.
Addressing concerns from federations about inadequate funding, the Chief Director of the Ministry assured members that efforts are underway to implement the Sports Fund, which is currently under review by Cabinet. He expressed confidence that once approved, it would help resolve many of the funding challenges faced by the federations.
