The Mahama administration is set to introduce a bill in Parliament aimed at renaming the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) along with other public universities across the country.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced this plan during the swearing-in ceremony of the CKT-UTAS Governing Council in Accra. Established in 2021, CKT-UTAS was designed to equip students with practical and technical skills for the global workforce. However, the university has faced ongoing infrastructure challenges, and its name has sparked mixed reactions, with some stakeholders opposing it from the start.

Haruna Iddrisu stated that this renaming initiative is part of a broader effort to review and potentially rename several public universities created or renamed during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo. The government has consulted widely with academic communities, traditional leaders, alumni, students, and civil society, leading to the decision to possibly revert CKT-UTAS’s name to reflect its original vision.

The proposed bill will also address the renaming of other public institutions, such as the University of Mines and Technology and Abdulai Salifu University. While the renaming is not meant to diminish the legacies of the individuals these universities were named after, it aims to restore the historical identities and foundational principles of these institutions.

The government is expected to table the bill in Parliament soon, formalizing the renaming process.
