GNFS, GWCL Collaborate to Improve Fire Hydrant Access in Tema

Story Highlights
  • GNFS and GWCL team up to fix non-functional fire hydrants
  • Only 797 out of 1,832 hydrants in Ghana are operational
  • Tema New-Town flagged as high-risk due to lack of hydrants

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Tema Regional Command is partnering with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of fire hydrants in the region.

Led by Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Patrick Sallah, GNFS met with GWCL’s Regional Chief Manager, Dr. Samuel Ason, to discuss critical issues including the repair of buried or faulty hydrants, upgrading non-standard couplings, and ensuring adequate water pressure during fire emergencies.

A major concern highlighted was the lack of hydrants in high-risk areas like Tema New-Town. National data shows only 797 out of 1,832 hydrants across Ghana are currently functional.

To address these gaps, both agencies agreed to form a joint task force focused on restoring and maintaining hydrants to boost fire safety in the region.
