Ghana Launches $1M Fund to Boost Smallholder Farming in the North

Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has launched a US$1 million revolving fund to support smallholder farmers in the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone.

Unveiled in Accra, the fund is part of a broader initiative backed by a US$20 million grant from the Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme (GAFSP), with additional support from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and in partnership with ARB Apex Bank.

The programme targets 12 districts across six regions, aiming to empower thousands of smallholder farmers—especially women and youth—through access to climate-smart inputs, mechanization tools, solar-powered irrigation kits, and financial services to strengthen food systems and increase resilience.

Minister Opoku emphasized that the initiative goes beyond financing—it’s about building sustainable agricultural systems and securing long-term food security.
