Communication Minister Sam George has announced that Ghanaians will enjoy discounted and enhanced data bundles on five key national holidays—Independence Day, May Day, Republic Day, Founders’ Day, and Farmers’ Day—thanks to an agreement with telecom operators. This follows successful negotiations after initial resistance to applying the offer across all 18 holidays.
He clarified that a committee has developed a roadmap with short, medium, and long-term strategies to address data costs. While broad price cuts aren’t yet possible, specific demographics will be targeted first. He also cited high taxes and electricity costs as key factors influencing data prices and revealed plans to engage the PURC for a telecom-specific power tariff.
Sam George emphasized that real changes are underway and praised telcos for their cooperation.
