Kumasi Mayor Warns Against Reconstruction of Adum Blue Light Market After Fire

The Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has issued a firm warning to victims of the recent Adum Blue Light Market fire, advising against any attempts to rebuild their structures.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Boadi emphasized that any unauthorized reconstruction efforts will be demolished. He referenced a detailed report on the fire incident, which recommended the demolition of the affected building.

The fire, which broke out on March 21, 2025, destroyed numerous shops and commercial spaces, leaving thousands of traders facing significant losses. Goods worth millions of cedis were destroyed in the blaze.

In the aftermath, several individuals, including political figures, have visited the market to offer condolences and make donations. However, Mr. Boadi revealed that, after reviewing the report, the KMA assembly will meet on Thursday to make a final decision on the next steps. He expressed frustration with traders’ continued defiance, reminding them that the building belongs to the KMA and is structurally unsafe.

While members of the NPP have provided cement to aid in reconstruction, Mr. Boadi stated that it is unnecessary, as the structure must first be demolished before any rebuilding efforts can begin.

“I will demolish everything they’ve attempted so far. They shouldn’t waste their time and resources,” he said, adding that the necessary authorities have received the report and are awaiting approval for the next course of action.
