NHIA to Expand Free Dialysis Programme in Ghana

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced plans to expand its free dialysis programme to improve access to critical kidney treatment across Ghana.

As part of the expansion, more dialysis machines and medical supplies will be provided to hospitals nationwide, supporting the government’s broader effort to strengthen healthcare delivery.

NHIA CEO, Dr. Victor Bampoe, said the goal is to extend coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to benefit more renal patients.

“The previous government launched the free dialysis programme with 20 centres. We aim to scale it up and make it financially sustainable,” he said.

Dr. Bampoe also shared that the NHIA plans to fully integrate dialysis treatment into NHIS coverage, ensuring it becomes as accessible as other insured medical services.

The move is expected to ease the financial strain on patients and families burdened by the high cost of dialysis.
