Greater Accra Declared Cholera-Free

Story Highlights
  • Greater Accra goes 30 days without cholera cases
  • Region officially declared cholera-free by GHS
  • 151 cases, 10 deaths earlier in the year—now zero

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has officially declared the Greater Accra Region free of cholera, following a 30-day period without any reported cases.

This announcement was made during a media workshop focused on enhancing cholera risk reporting within the region.

In an interview with JoyNews, Akumatey Tetteh, Greater Accra Regional EPI Manager, confirmed the milestone and called it a significant public health success.

“I can confidently say that Greater Accra is currently cholera-free,” Tetteh stated. “In the first and second quarters of the year, we recorded 151 cases and 10 deaths. But at present, no new cases have been reported. Our surveillance data confirms zero cholera reports, and we are in a safe position for now.”

Eunice Joan Teah Dzagli, the region’s Health Promotion Officer, emphasized the importance of maintaining this status, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

“Our goal is to keep cholera cases at zero throughout the rainy season,” she said. “This will require a united effort involving the media, religious groups, and various organizations. We do not want a repeat of the difficult period we experienced in November, December, and January.”

This declaration represents a major stride in the region’s ongoing efforts to improve public health and prevent future cholera outbreaks.
