Government Rejects Gold Fields’ Damang Lease Extension

Story Highlights
  • Ghana rejects Gold Fields’ request to extend Damang mine lease
  • Company instructed to cease operations by April 18, 2025
  • Gold Fields cites full compliance and ongoing talks with government

The Government has denied Gold Fields’ application to extend its Damang Main Mining Lease and has instructed the company to halt operations and vacate the site by April 18, 2025.

The directive, issued by the Minerals Commission, has raised concerns about the future of one of Ghana’s significant gold mining operations.

Gold Fields, a major global gold producer, revealed that it submitted the lease extension request in December 2024. The company noted that despite “extensive engagement” with authorities and full compliance with all legal requirements, it was informed of the rejection and is now preparing to close the Damang mine.

While the company is planning a responsible shutdown, the abrupt closure is expected to lead to major job losses and could disrupt the livelihoods of communities that rely on the mine.

Industry experts have warned that the move could negatively impact investor confidence in Ghana’s mining sector.

Gold Fields, however, says it is still in talks with the government in hopes of reaching a more favorable resolution.

“The Company remains committed to engaging with the Government to achieve the best possible outcome for all stakeholders,” the statement read.
