TUC Urges Government to Investigate Missing ECG Cargo

Story Highlights
  • TUC calls for government action on the disappearance of over 1,000 ECG containers
  • Independent audit reveals a significant discrepancy: 1,357 containers unaccounted for
  • TUC advocates for transparency in ECG’s procurement processes to prevent future losses

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is urging the government to take firm action against those responsible for the disappearance of more than 1,000 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

These missing containers, reportedly packed with vital electrical cables and equipment, have deepened the financial challenges facing ECG and pose a serious threat to the nation’s energy supply system.

The demand comes after it was revealed that ECG initially declared 2,491 containers were uncleared at the port. However, an independent audit found that only 1,134 containers could be verified—leaving 1,357 containers unaccounted for.

The significant shortfall has caused public outrage, with widespread concern about how such a large volume of critical supplies could go missing undetected. Speaking on Eyewitness News on April 10, 2025, Dr. Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, Director of Research and Policy at the TUC, emphasized the urgent need for accountability.

“This is the time to prove that we are not going back to business as usual,” he said. “Ghanaians expect their elected leaders to act decisively. Those who authorized the removal of these containers and those abusing procurement processes to defraud ECG must be held accountable.”

Dr. Otoo stressed that addressing procurement lapses and ensuring transparency within ECG is essential to preventing such incidents in the future and restoring confidence in the power sector.
