A yet-to-be-identified youth group has partially set fire to the residence of Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, amid rising unrest in the Bawku Municipality. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 10, 2025, following a series of violent events in the area.
According to reports from TV3, the military has since intervened, taking control of the situation to prevent further escalation.
The violence stems from a shooting incident on Wednesday that left one person dead and two others critically injured. In addition to Ayariga’s residence, the private home of Bawku Divisional Police Commander, ACP Adamu Seidu, was also targeted and set on fire.
The unrest reportedly originated from a faction involved in the ongoing chieftaincy dispute. Members of this faction allegedly demanded that women from the opposing group vacate the market premises where they were trading. The confrontation escalated into a scuffle, prompting police intervention.
Gunfire erupted when some youth allegedly opened fire on the police, leading to an exchange of shots.
