IGP Leads Team to Bawku After Deadly Clashes and Arson Attack

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is leading a top-level team of officers from operations, investigations, and intelligence units to Bawku in the Upper East Region to assess the current security situation.

This action follows a violent clash between local youth and police, which tragically resulted in the death of Fuseini Iddrisu. Five others, including a police officer and an immigration officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving medical treatment.

Although calm was temporarily restored on April 9, 2025, through a joint effort by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces, tensions reignited on April 10 when a group of angry youth allegedly attacked and set fire to the residence of Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku. The incident occurred in the Wiidi suburb, where the house was first stoned and later set ablaze.

The unrest is reportedly linked to public outrage over the alleged police killing of a young man.

In a statement on April 10, the Ghana Police Service announced that the IGP and his team will also meet with the family of the deceased, visit the injured victims, and engage with officers affected by the violence.

The Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Ghana Armed Forces, local leaders, and stakeholders to restore and maintain peace and order in Bawku.
