Aggrey and Associates Limited has launched a new foundation focused on land reclamation and ecological restoration, aiming to support environmental sustainability and encourage responsible mining practices.

The foundation’s first project will begin in Konongo, targeting lands degraded by illegal mining activities. Director Kofi Twum Ampofo Aggrey revealed that the initial phase would involve planting mahogany and castor oil seedlings. Additionally, baseline studies will be conducted to assess local community needs and inform future interventions.

This initiative aligns with the Ghana Land Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project (GLRSSM), launched in 2021 by various government bodies, including MESTI, EPA, and MLNR. The GLRSSM is part of the broader National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP), which focuses on restoring degraded lands and providing sustainable job opportunities for communities affected by illegal mining.

During the launch, key stakeholders from the mining and environmental sectors, including policymakers and sustainability experts, attended. Sam Priddy, Director of PW Mining International, praised government efforts in tackling illegal mining but emphasized the importance of stronger community engagement.

In a related development, the government has intensified efforts to protect Ghana’s water bodies through the Blue Water Initiative. Energy Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah announced a four-week training program for 460 Blue Water Guards, who will monitor and protect vital water sources. President John Mahama is expected to commission the first batch of 400 youth river guards on April 14, in partnership with the Ghana Navy.

These joint initiatives from both the government and private sector, like Aggrey and Associates, demonstrate a growing commitment to reversing the environmental harm caused by illegal mining and promoting sustainable development in Ghana.
