Manageress Sentenced to Five Years for Stealing Over GH¢220,000 from Lotto Company

A 38-year-old manageress has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality for stealing GH¢221,937.75 in Santasi, Kumasi.

Akua Darkoah Asamoah pleaded guilty to the charge of theft and was convicted based on her own admission.

Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, who prosecuted the case, informed the court, presided over by Mr. Jephthah Appau, that the complainant was the General Manager of FOE Lotto Limited, a subsidiary of Lotto and Lotteries, based in Santasi. Asamoah, the convicted individual, was the manageress of the Atwima-Techiman branch.

The prosecutor detailed that between March 22nd and June 2nd, 2024, the complainant discovered that Asamoah had stolen part of the lotto sales she collected from sub-agents on behalf of the company, instead of remitting the funds to the head office in Kumasi. The total amount stolen during this period was GH¢221,937.75.

A report was filed with the Suntreso Police, leading to Asamoah’s arrest. In her caution statement, she admitted to the theft.

According to the prosecution, a forensic audit revealed that, after the winning numbers had been drawn, the convict forged lotto tickets to falsely indicate that she had won in several lotto games, attempting to cover up the theft.

Following further investigations, she was charged and brought before the court.
