National Security Discovers Bank of Ghana Cash Boxes Linked to Counterfeit Currency

- The discovery follows the February 2025 bust of ten 40-foot containers filled with fake Ghana cedi and US dollar notes
- Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations, confirms the cash boxes are authentic BoG property
- Authorities are investigating how the legitimate assets ended up with the criminal syndicate
In a startling development, National Security operatives have discovered several genuine Bank of Ghana (BoG) cash boxes at a crime scene in Sapeiman, Ga West Municipality, Greater Accra, raising alarming questions about their link to a sophisticated counterfeit currency syndicate.
The discovery of authentic BoG cash boxes follows the February 2025 seizure of ten 40-foot containers filled with counterfeit Ghana cedi and US dollar notes.
During a site inspection on Sunday, Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, confirmed that the boxes were genuine BoG property, not replicas.
Authorities are now investigating how these state-approved financial assets ended up in the hands of the criminal network behind the counterfeit operation.
This revelation has deepened concerns about the scale of the syndicate’s operations and how long it has been functioning undetected.
In the meantime, Mr. Jakpa revealed that a manhunt is underway for the suspected leader of the counterfeiting syndicate. The elderly man, known locally as the “Battery Doctor,” is believed to have been a front for the real operations—mass-producing counterfeit currency and fake gold bars.
Investigators are currently searching for an individual known only as “Alhaji,” who is suspected to be the mastermind behind the illegal operation.
Jakpa confirmed that authorities have strong evidence linking Alhaji to the crime scene and a wider network of illicit activities.
“We are confident it’s just a matter of time before he is caught,” Jakpa stated, assuring the public that National Security is committed to bringing those behind the operation to justice.
