Police Bust Illegal Mining Ring, Arrest Eleven in Akyem Fichser

The Eastern South Regional Police Command in the Eastern Region has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against illegal mining, apprehending eleven individuals involved in unlawful activities in the Akyem Fichser community, near Bunsu.
The operation, initiated by the regional police, followed a tip-off regarding the severe damage caused by illegal miners to local tree plantations.
Among those arrested are nine Ghanaians: Kwaku Owusu (42), Philip Tetteh (52), Abdul Raham (27), Philip Duvor (40), Joseph Asare (32), Charles Manu (35), Joseph Araboga (32), Daniel Bangah (20), and Amoaho Isaac (25). Additionally, two nationals from Burkina Faso, Jey Done (40) and Adoma Aboubakar (25), were also detained.
Authorities revealed that the illegal mining activities had led to significant harm to the tree plantations in the Fichser area, raising serious concerns about their long-term environmental impact.
During the operation, police also confiscated an excavator, which is now being held as evidence.
The eleven suspects are currently in police custody and will soon face court proceedings.
Speaking to the media in Kyebi, the Eastern South Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ohene Boadi Bossman, emphasized the police service’s ongoing commitment to combating crime and maintaining public order in the region.
DCOP Bossman reassured the public, especially in the Eastern South region, that the police are dedicated to curbing illegal activities and ensuring the safety and security of local communities.
This arrest underscores the continuous efforts by Ghanaian authorities to address illegal mining, which poses a serious threat to both the environment and local populations.
The police have expressed their determination to pursue these cases vigorously to prevent further unlawful actions.
