MTN Ghana has announced that it will await the government’s decision regarding its potential involvement in the Next Gen Infraco (NGIC) consortium, which is leading the nationwide 5G network rollout. The deployment of 5G is already underway in key cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, with plans to expand nationwide within the next two years.

Currently, AT Ghana Limited has joined NGIC’s open-access platform, while Telecel Ghana is said to be nearing the final stages of negotiations. MTN’s participation remains uncertain, sparking speculation within the telecom sector.

In his first anniversary message as CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett explained that the company is waiting for guidance from the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel George. “We have had discussions with NGIC and explored different possibilities. Regardless of how the 5G rollout proceeds, MTN will be involved in some capacity—whether through NGIC, a hybrid model, or other approaches. We are open to collaborating as partners. For now, we are awaiting the minister’s direction,” Blewett stated.

Blewett also reassured the public about concerns related to the transition to 5G, reaffirming MTN Ghana’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and effective rollout of the new network technology.
