Ghanaian artist and music producer Kuami Eugene has paid tribute to the late Togolese music legend, Omar B, whose real name was Ahiangban Omar.
To honor the late icon, Kuami Eugene has released a cover of Omar B’s classic song Awoo Mawugné. Kuami Eugene was introduced to Omar B’s music by a friend, and after discovering their shared talent for writing, singing, and producing, he became deeply interested in the late artist’s work. He later learned that Omar B tragically passed away at a time when his career was flourishing, leaving behind a young family.
In tribute, Kuami Eugene decided to record his own version of Awoo Mawugné, a song that had resonated with him, and to donate all proceeds to Omar B’s family. “After I learned the meaning of the song, I was moved by the powerful lyrics, so I wanted to do a rendition to honor him,” Kuami Eugene explained.
The Rockstar emphasized that this tribute is “not for profit,” stressing that it’s driven purely by love and respect. “All the revenue generated will go directly to Omar B’s family,” he added, hoping the song will raise awareness and support for them.
Omar B, known for his innovation and rapid rise in the music scene, became an inspiration to young artists in Togo. His third album, Me, Myself and I, was released in 2019, but tragically, he passed away on February 20, 2020, at the age of 35, following a heart attack.
