Driver Discharged in Court After Fraud Charges Dropped

- The Accra Circuit Court cleared Samuel Twumasi of fraud charges due to lack of evidence
- Twumasi wept uncontrollably after being discharged, likely due to time spent in custody
- Twumasi’s co-accused, Isaac Danso, remains in custody facing charges
A 37-year-old driver, Samuel Twumasi, broke down in tears when an Accra Circuit Court discharged him of charges related to conspiracy and two counts of defrauding by false pretenses. During the court session, Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, representing the prosecution, informed the court that the Police lacked sufficient evidence to pursue the case against Twumasi.
As a result, the presiding judge, Samuel Bright Acquah, granted Twumasi’s discharge.
After the ruling, Twumasi was overcome with emotion and cried as he exited the dock. Despite attempts by some police officers to console him with the words “Barima nsu,” Twumasi could not stop crying. It was revealed that Twumasi had been unable to meet his court bail conditions, which led to him being in police custody.
Twumasi had been standing trial alongside Isaac Danso, a 38-year-old communication consultant, who was facing the same charges. However, Danso was absent from the court during Twumasi’s discharge. The prosecution informed the court that Danso had been re-arrested by the police and was now in custody at Kasoa.
With Twumasi’s discharge, Danso will face trial alone. Danso is accused of collecting $4,000 from Adinan Lamidi under the false pretense of securing a Canadian visa. He is also accused of taking $2,000 from Marwan Mustapha for the same purpose but failing to deliver. Both accused were arrested on September 15, 2024.
