- Kennedy Ofori Boateng’s family urges faster justice
- They demand the arrest of the fellow officer involved
- Kennedy was accidentally shot during a police checkpoint clash
The family of Police Constable Kennedy Ofori Boateng, who was tragically killed at a police checkpoint in Abease, has voiced their dissatisfaction with the Ghana Police Service over the slow progress in seeking justice for his death.
Nearly four months after the incident, the family feels that Kennedy’s murder has not been treated with the urgency or seriousness it deserves.
As a result, they have called on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, to accelerate the investigation into Kennedy’s death.
During a press conference held at Fawohoyeden in the Ahafo Region, Kennedy’s father, Nana Kyei Baffour Bosomprah, expressed his concerns. He questioned why the police have not yet apprehended the suspect, who is a fellow officer, and brought them to justice. He warned that if justice is not served, the family may be forced to take matters into their own hands.
Other family members, including Otis Otu-Acheampong and Paulina Boakyewaa, shared their frustration with Adom News, accusing the Ghana Police Service of failing to show enough determination to capture the person responsible for Kennedy’s death.
The family is urging the new IGP to conduct a thorough investigation, ensure the arrest of the suspect, and bring them to trial to secure justice for Kennedy and his loved ones.
Kennedy was fatally shot on the Prang to Kintampo Road in the Bono East Region on Sunday, December 15, 2024. The incident occurred when a group of mourners was stopped at a routine police checkpoint, but instead of a regular stop, they encountered a police barrier, leading to a confrontation.
The situation escalated when one of the mourners allegedly insulted a policewoman, prompting a request for backup. Upon the arrival of the reinforcements, tensions boiled over, and a police officer fired warning shots. During an attempt by the mourners to disarm the officer, the gun accidentally discharged, striking and killing his colleague in the abdomen.
